What is Public Schools Week?

Join Us in Celebrating Public Schools Week Every Year!

It’s an annual week-long celebration dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions and achievements of educators and education advocates in our public schools and the communities they serve. Led by the Learning First Alliance (LFA), a coalition of 11 national education groups with a collective membership exceeding 10 million, Public Schools Week invites the education community, parents, lawmakers and others to join us in spotlighting our nation’s public schools and the dedicated individuals behind them. We invite you to join us in celebrating and supporting our public schools during Public Schools Week and all year long.

Why celebrate Public Schools Week?

Research consistently demonstrates that parents and community members are largely supportive of their local public schools, recognizing the vital role educators play in preparing children for success in an evolving world. Public Schools Week aims to showcase the dynamic things happening in public schools, how we are responding to current and post-pandemic challenges, and the invaluable lessons learned, ultimately contributing to the ongoing improvement of K-12 education.

#PSW26 Convening Highlights

During #PSW26, LFA brought together practitioners, stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers to highlight how efforts to undermine public education are impacting the field and hindering educators’ ability to reach and serve students. The event elevated promising research and practices and included a discussion on what’s needed to build a stronger, fairer, and more resilient public education system. Jessica Cardichon, Chief of Strategic Impact at the Learning Policy Institute emphasized the role public schools play in civic engagement and preparing students to be good citizens, collaborators, and community members, as well as the importance of the human connection in learning.

“Behind every funding stream is a real child,” said Nikki Woodward, VP, Maryland State Education Association. “When schools are fully funded, staffed, and supported, they become places where opportunity is not rationed but shared.”

Abbie shared how her McKinney-Vento liaison and a community program helped her find stability and finish her senior year of high school. Without that support, she’s not sure it would have been possible. For many students, school is more than a place to learn – it’s a safe space that connects students with vital resources.
